Summary

AI chatbots (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) account for just 0.26%[1] of all web traffic. But clicks are only the tip of the iceberg. The vast majority of AI interactions where a brand is mentioned never result in a click.

Based on four independent data sources, this model estimates that every AI click in Google Analytics 4 represents roughly 80 to 330 AI prompts where the brand may have been mentioned in an AI response without the user clicking through.

Click-through rate from AI platforms

CTR dropped from 0.80% to 0.27% during 2025[5][6]

0.80% 0.60% 0.40% 0.20% 0.80% 0.48% 0.27% Q2 2025 Q3 2025 Q4 2025

During 2025, click-through rates from AI platforms dropped by roughly 40% each quarter. This means AI tools are getting better at answering questions without sending traffic onward. For brands, it means more and more mentions happen entirely out of sight, with no trace in Google Analytics 4.

ChatGPT dominates with 82% of all AI-referred traffic, but every platform contributes to invisible impressions.

Data sources behind the model

Calculation Model

A Bottom-up: Reverse calculation from click flow
Step Description Factor
1Start with 1 click (visible in GA4)1
2Search responses with links (CTR ≈ 2–4%)[10]×25–50 responses
3Search share of prompts (≈ 31%)[9]×3.2 prompts
ResultTotal prompts per click≈80–160

Note: Each search response typically references 3–5 brands (source: Profound, Search Engine Land), meaning actual brand exposure may be even higher.

B Top-down: Global numbers
Step Description Value
1Weekly active users, ChatGPT[11]900M
2Prompts per user/week≈15
3Search/guidance prompts (77%)[2]≈12
4Total brand-related prompts/week≈10 billion
5Outbound clicks/week (CTR ≈ 0.27%)[5][6]≈30–40 million
ResultMultiplier (prompts / click)≈250–330×

Note: Method B is a rough estimate combining data from different measurement contexts. Prompts per user (step 2) and CTR (step 5) come from separate studies with different methodologies. The result indicates order of magnitude rather than a precise figure.

Key Limitations

1
Selection bias
Public data from certain site types.
The data sources are based on websites included in each study's sample group. Niche industries, B2B sites, and local markets may show entirely different patterns.
2
Industry variation
The multiplier varies by vertical.
E-commerce, health, and finance likely have higher click-through rates (lower multiplier), while information-heavy topics like travel or tech have lower CTR (higher multiplier).
3
Training data influence
Your visibility depends on training data.
If your brand isn't well represented in the model's training data, or lacks E-E-A-T signals, the number of mentions may be significantly lower regardless of how good your content is.
4
Rapid evolution
These numbers have a short shelf life.
AI usage is growing fast. ChatGPT went from 400M to 900M weekly active users in twelve months. CTR, search share, and usage patterns shift quarterly.

Practical Application

Use the multiplier to estimate your brand's total AI visibility:

Estimated AI mentions
AI clicks in GA4 × 80–330
Track AI referrals

Filter by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude as traffic source in Google Analytics 4 to see the click trend.

Optimize for LLMs

Create content that answers questions concisely and authoritatively to increase your chances of being cited.

Measure over time

Compare AI referrals month over month to spot trends in your AI visibility.

Calculate Your AI Impressions

Enter the number of clicks from AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) that you see in Google Analytics 4. The calculator estimates how many times your brand may have been mentioned in AI responses without generating a click.
